Leak behavior is likely
The pool lost more than the bucket under similar weather. Photograph the marks, protect the equipment water level, and request professional detection.
Send the result24-hour comparison
The bucket test answers one useful question: did the pool lose more water than evaporation removed from the bucket during the same period? It can support the decision to request detection, but it cannot tell you where the leak is.
Before you begin
Use the same 24 hours. Do not compare readings taken at different times.
Stop hidden refill water. Turn off the autofill only when it is safe to maintain the pool level.
Avoid rain and heavy use. Restart if outside water or splash-out makes the result unreliable.
Mark both levels clearly. A small difference is easy to misread without accurate starting lines.
Bucket test instructions
Avoid heavy rain, a pool party, backwashing, draining, and unusual spa or water-feature use. Keep the pool on its normal operating schedule.
An autofill can replace lost water and hide the pool’s true drop. Make sure the pool starts at a safe operating level and do not let the pump run without enough water.
Use a stable five-gallon bucket. Set it where pool water surrounds part of the bucket, but cannot wash over the rim.
Fill the bucket so the inside water level sits near the outside pool level. The levels do not have to be perfectly equal; both simply need clear starting marks.
Mark the water inside the bucket and the pool level outside the bucket. Painter’s tape or a clear photo can make the comparison easier.
Measure from each starting mark to its new waterline. Compare the amount lost, not the final height of the two surfaces.
Your result
The pool lost more than the bucket under similar weather. Photograph the marks, protect the equipment water level, and request professional detection.
Send the resultThe weather explains most of the loss during this test. Keep watching if frequent refilling, chemistry dilution, or nonstop autofill continues.
Review evaporation rangesRain, splash-out, a moving bucket, an active autofill, or faint marks can spoil the result. Correct the setup and repeat once rather than stretching an uncertain reading.
Know when to stop testing
A bucket test is useful when it shortens the decision. It becomes a distraction when the pool already needs constant water, the autofill rarely stops, the waterline repeatedly settles at one level, or the equipment risks running low.
Professional detection is what locates the source. Bring the technician your marks, photos, refill pattern, and anything you noticed about pump operation.
Request leak detectionBucket-test questions
It compares the pool’s water loss with water exposed to similar weather inside the bucket. If the pool drops noticeably more, evaporation alone is unlikely to explain the difference. The test does not locate the leak.
For the first test, keep the pool on its normal schedule and do not change settings during the 24-hour period. A second controlled comparison may help if pump operation appears to change the loss, but professional testing is more reliable for locating plumbing problems.
Rain can change both water levels and make a small difference difficult to trust. Restart during a more controlled period if the result is unclear.
Evaporation is the leading explanation for that test period. Continue watching the pattern if the pool still needs unusual refilling, the autofill runs constantly, or salt and stabilizer keep falling.
